The history of winemaking in Montecucco can be traced back centuries, with ancient Etruscan settlements being evidence of its viticultural heritage. However, it was in the late 20th century that the region began to gain recognition for its exceptional wines. In 1998, Montecucco obtained the prestigious Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status, solidifying its place among the esteemed wine regions of Italy.
The region experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. The region’s unique terroir, characterized by its clay and limestone soils, produces wines with depth, complexity, and a distinctive Tuscan character
The Poggio Leone collection is manually harvested in 20 Kg boxes, selecting only the best grapes from the vine. After harvest, the grapes are separated from the stems and lightly pressed and fermented from 15 – 30 days for maximum extraction of colours and flavours. The Monteccuco Sangiovese goes on to mature in oak for one year before release.
